MacDonald is a contributing editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, and is on the masthead of Vanity Fair magazine as a contributing artist. His illustrations have
also appeared in The
New Yorker, Newsweek,
Time, The New York Times,
Rolling Stone, The Wall Street
Journal, The London Sunday Telegraph,
Atlantic Monthly and Harpers.
He has written and illustrated humor pieces for Newsweek,
Time, Mother Jones,
The New York Times Op Ed Page, and others.
He has worked on ads, book covers, cards for the Museum of Modern Art, a postage stamp, animated shorts for Sesame Street, on-air television graphics, animation for a Saturday Night Live commercial parody, backgrounds for the Broadway and London stage productions of Tommy, and illustrations and title graphics for the movie Baby's Day Out.
He has also worked on the movies Seabiscuit, Van Helsing, Duplex, The Legend of Zorro, The Alamo, Infamous, Mr Brooks, King of California, and National Treasure 2, supplying illustrations and props, and as a consultant on historical design, paper, printing and writing instruments.
has lectured on design, letterpress, type and design history at the
School of Visual Arts in New York City and elsewhere.
His first children's picture book, "Another
Perfect Day" (Roaring Brook Press, 2002) received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus,
and was read on NPR by Daniel
Pinkwater. His second, "The
Noisy Alphabet" (Roaring Brook Press, 2003) -
a celebration of wood type - was chosen as a book of the week by Publishers
Weekly, and a Best Book of 2003 by both Child Magazine and Nick Jr. magazine.
He lives in Connecticut with his wife, two children, two dogs, three cats, and a large collection of 19th century type and printing equipment.
